Embedded LAN* is a high-performance network operating system designed especially for transporting data inside and between real-time embedded systems. Its multi-threaded APIs extend the Embedded DOS 6-XL* APIs by providing communications services at the LAN¦s physical layer, the transport layer, with lPC, and by providing transparent remote file sharing between Embedded DOS 6-XL nodes.
The Embedded LAN architecture lets you mix file sharing traffic, IPC traffic, and raw data transportation on the same LAN all at the same time for maximum performance. Whenever you have a need to transport data between loosely-coupled or tightly-coupled 80x86-based embedded systems, Embedded LAN can provide the communications services with maximum control over quality-of-service. For example transporting financial data requires reliable delivery, but a video mail application would observe degraded performance without the "best-effort" delivery option in Embedded LAN from General Software.
To develop products that use the Embedded LAN Communication APIs, start with the Embedded LAN Adaptation Kit. It includes ready-to-run binary versions of the Embedded LAN components, as well as full source for configuring the system or integrating it into your application directly. Virtually the entire operating system is written in clean C, and it includes liberal internal and external documentation. Embedded LAN comes with a binary copy of Embedded DOS so that you can use it right away on a PC network. You will need an Embedded DOS 6-XL Adaptation Kit to build custom versions of Embedded DOS 6-XL that run on your target.
